Interview..In his own words.
  • How did your musical journey start?
    • In my school days I used to take part in music competitions and I used to become1st-2nd. After S.L.C. also I was singing in various stage shows with my band and at that time I got encouragement from friends and all. They used to say my voice was very good, and I was born to be an Artist. Then I joined Lalit Kala College. I studied music there for 2 years and even did 5 years classical music at Gandharva. Then it was in 2059 B.S., I was recording my album in one studio (Classical, pop and modern song album which is not released till now because I was not satisfied with sound quality and instruments used by arranger), hearing me several times in recording of that album, Ramesh Adhikari Dai purposed me to sing a Dohari song for Rs 5000. I sang a dohari song for him. That song was my own composition and it did well in the market. After that I sang National Dohari songs and those songs too got popular and then lots of Dohari songs and dohari songs. I had planned to be a versatile singer but now I have trademark of Dohari songs.
  • What happened to your band?
    • I was in "Sadaz Band" when I was in college and still am. It’s a non
professional band and we are working on it slowly. Whenever we feel like
playing we get together and jam up. We do Jazz, semi-slow rock and classical numbers. We even released album titled "Time vs. Us" in which there were Peace songs. Let’s see what will come next.
  • Are you thinking of this as your long term career?
    • Yes definitely. Now a days we can make good money from this field. Good
singer can even build home from earning in this field. But for that, lots of
hard work is needed. So I will continue in this field as long as I can sing.
After that too I will be involved in this field in whatever I can.
  • Your album Aago Dankiyo is doing well in the market. How would you
    describe the album?
    • This album is same like "Lathi Charge". I had planned to do this album by myself but later I did duet with Sindhu Malla. Dharahara Music liked that album and said they will give Rs. 1 lakh in advance and I gave them DAT for distribution. But even after distribution in the market they made no payment. It was doing very well in the market but since they made no payment I stopped that album's distribution from Dharahara Music. I trusted them but they betrayed me, they just tried to take advantage of my innocence.
  • Do you compose your own songs?
    • My own songs I compose myself but when I sing for others I'll have to sing in their composition. After all I am being paid to sing for them.
  • How is it working with Sindhu Malla?
    • Sindhu is a self talented singer. Our feelings and depth of the song
matches. So I feel much easier singing with her.
  • You know that Nepali music scene is picking up. Do you agree with that?
    • Yes Nepali music is definitely picking up even folk songs. In the past
people used to neglect folk songs and even felt uneasy to sing folk songs. But now a days all are towards folk songs, even pop singers are singing pop songs based on folk music. Folk music is the ornament of the nation. When we sing folk songs we feel proud.
  • What’s your view on Nepali pop and rock music? How would you compare folk
songs with pop and rock scene?
    • Music is the combination of seven notes. Only the style is different. Main
thing is the song should have good lyrics, music and good voice. Its own
choice to sing which type to songs to sing. So I don't say which music is
good and which is not. Folk songs are from old tradition. Its the same
pattern in which the songs were sang in various parts of Nepal from ancient times but new songs are modified version of those old tunes.
  • What has been your most inspiring moment and the most discourage moment in
    your musical life?
    • Most inspiring moment was when I got the first chance to sing a song for Rs 5000 and also after 5-6 years of training I had zeal to do something and those were the most inspiring moments.
Most discouraging moments is when people give hope and later nothing in hand like the case of my new album "Aago Dankiyo" where Dharahara Music betrayed me. Not only that even in stage shows sometimes we don’t get paid. If I calculate all those I have loss around 1.5 - 2 lakhs of my compensation and hard work.
  • What has been the difficult part in being an artist?
    • As per our popularity we don't have any facilities here so it has been bit
difficult. Sometimes I even ride cycle and people comment about it. Another problem is my English Language. But I am who I am and I have not changed my living style.
  • What’s your thought on Nepali music and industry? How do you intend to save
it and take it to the next level?
    • Basically I am into folk music and its expanding rapidly. Now a days most
singers are after it. I too am aware on how to save it. There are many
unheard melodies in villages. So we should do research of it and see which notes are used in those tunes so that according to those notes future generation can sing in those tunes/songs. Only singing is not art but this is also a part of it. And those in abroad also should try to promote Nepali music wherever they are.
  • What are your thoughts on piracy, copyright issues? What could be done to
    protect?
    • Artists put lots of hard work and labor to come up with his/her creations.
An even lot of investment is there in recording the songs and making videos. But piracy is killing the artists and kills his/her courage. If the
listeners can't buy albums by self then at least they should share and buy. Two-three friends can collect the money and buy an album and listen turn by turn instead of copying the songs. Music companies also should be strong. There should be union of companies so that they can take immediate action to the faulty. And of course government should support the music companies while taking action and should implement strong copyright acts immediately.
  • What's your view on media coverage?
    • We need media and artists are supported by media. Most of the media is doing well but some media are doing unfair judgment. Media should categorize the songs and give priority to good songs.
  • What is your advice to music listeners?
    • Love Nepali songs specially our own folk songs and if you to want to enter
this field then first learn then only enter this field.
  • What’s your next project?
    • My next project is my first solo album "Gaambesi" which is in final stage
and I am working in full speed with full hope. I have recorded more then 450 songs but till now I have not released my solo album. So for all my music lovers it’s good news.
  • Can you tell more about that album?
    • Actually due to heavy demand of audience and listeners I am coming up with this album. I have not released any solo albums till now, all my songs were duet and dohari. So to satisfy my listeners I am coming up with this album.  That album comprises of 10 songs including 2 remix songs "Kalo Kurthaile" and "Hariyo Danda Mathi". It’s a modern folk song album of which some melodies are from gaambesi so it’s entitled same. In that album lyrics are by Raj Kumar Bagar and Kiran Ghimire (Michael) & music 2 songs are by B.B. Anuragi (Paribesh Band) and rest by me. The album is due to release in 3rd week of August. Finance is all managed by The Rebel Creations.
  • Tell us something about your abroad musical tour.
    • I did shows in Arabian countries but there is too much "Dalali". The
organizers are very worst and they need too much commission. In every step they need commission. So we have to work with small hearts. But audience there are very good and supportive. Their craze shows they really missed Nepal and Nepali songs.
  • Any last words?
    • Well, Love Nepali music.....I am very shortly coming with my solo album "Gaambesi" Hope you’ll love it.
