After becoming the ‘American Idol’ Season 18 finalist, and dazzling the judges and audience with his unique voice, Arthur Gunn released his EP, “Self-Titled”, on July 14th, 2020. The seven song album is a mix of hip-hop, reggae, rap, and jazz, contrasting from his signature “folky, classic rock” musical persona on ‘American Idol’. Many of his fans noticed this change of genre, and expressed their views on social media.

Ed Chavez was shocked to hear the new album, and wrote on Facebook“Completely the opposite of what I was was thinking he would of released! The folky country old rock is what I thought that you were about. I’m shocked with this hip hop soulful album. Good luck with everything! Hope that you do music like that again! Bless.”

Morphine Dose, wasn’t as satisfied with the album either, calling for Arthur to bring back the country music that they were so hooked to, and wrote,  “I instantly searched for the album when I saw this video. I love your past songs like ‘pralaya’& ‘Nyano Ghar’ I love your voice more than any other new nepali artists but I seriously don’t like your new album, I expected something else to play in my playlist on repeat mode but a ‘rap!!!’ bro seriously (I expected heart touching, melting, breaking, song and got this).”

Linda Mcafee commented, “On American Idol your choices of songs were soulful Raspy. I followed you through to the end on the show. I didn’t like your album . Just saying . Sorry. Just saying.”

Kareen, also expected that Arthur would stick to the genre that he had picked during Idol journey, but doesn’t  seems to dismiss it completely.

Some fans however, enjoyed this unforeseen musical style, appreciating the album’s laidback, relaxing vibes.  Susy Moore comments , “ I loved it Arthur! Brought back memories of sitting on the beach in Jamaica…”

You may be wondering why Arthur ditched his signature music style that helped him get so far in ‘American Idol’. Arthur himself hasn’t explained his reasoning, but there may be a number of reasons for his decision. Here are our top three guesses:

  1. First of all, Arthur, 22, is still very young. He may be experimenting with and exploring different types of styles. In this case, it’s rap and hip-hop.
  2. His producer, Angelo Tomas, also could have played a role in what went on the album. The producer oversees the artist’s recording, and the final product. They keep an eye out for the latest trends that can help commercialize the album. The producer could also be trying to grab the attention of Gen-Z, as rap and hip-hop is a genre that is popular among the younger generation. However, this is assuming that the producer became involved with Arthur before he started composing for this album. We’re not sure if the producer encouraged Arthur to experiment with this new style.
  3. Last, but not least, this may simply be another music genre that Arthur enjoys, that we didn’t know he liked. It is important to note that this is just the start of Arthur Gunn’s career. We hope that his talent will take him far, and we just have to wait and see what he comes up with next. Arthur Gunn’s Nepali Album “GRAHAN”

21 year old, Dibesh chose a stage name that is also symbolic of the power of an English name, given that the land he calls home now would find it easier to relate to him by his adopted stage name of Arthur Gunn. He is making many people proud, and social media has been one of the bright spots in highlighting overlooked talents. Dibesh has now become a pride of Nepal, his homeland, and Wichita, Kansas, his adopted home since five years ago. Idol Chatter has provided some basic background information on the budding star. He had migrated after completing his school leaving certificate exam. Although not from a musical family, he was gifted a guitar by his mom as a child and was exposed to music in his environment. After a long gap, he took up music again a year before he left for the land of opportunities. It was in Kansas, he was introduced to country and blue grass music, which he has embraced in his singing. Dibesh is definitely on a new track of his life. His name recognition has leap-frogged and his talent is in the world sight.
